Q&A

Q8 : What is autotransplantation of teeth?

It is possible to transplant the teeth extracted for orthodontic purposes to other sites in the same mouth. Success of autotransplantation depends on the amount of damage to the periodontal membrane covering the root of the transplanted tooth. New bone is formed around the tooth at its recipient site by the cells derived from the periodontal membrane. The tooth also forms a new attachment with the gum at the new site and functions as if it had been there for a long time.
